Maafushi is a living Maldivian island, not a private resort. We're a locally run team who grew up on these waters, and we'd love to show you our island the way we know it.
Maafushi sits in South Malé Atoll, around 25 km from Malé and Velana International Airport - a short speedboat ride away. Turquoise lagoons, sandbanks and coral reefs surround the island on every side.
It's home to about 4,500 islanders, with a school, mosques, family cafés and fishing boats in the harbour. Staying here means seeing everyday Maldivian life, eating where locals eat and paying fair local prices - with the same white sand and clear water the Maldives is famous for.

From a quiet fishing village to the Maldives' best-known local island.
Around 2,000 people lived on Maafushi, mostly from fishing and a few government jobs. Tourists only stopped by on short day trips from nearby resorts - the law kept tourist stays on private resort islands.
A change in Maldivian law allowed guesthouses on inhabited islands. Maafushi was one of the first to welcome travellers, as local families opened guesthouses, dive centres, cafés and watersports.
With more than 50 guesthouses and 600+ rooms, Maafushi is the most developed local island for tourism - and tourism has helped bring better healthcare, sanitation and education to the community.
