Local rules & customs
Maafushi is a Muslim community - a few simple rules make your stay smooth and respectful.
Updated 21 October 2026

Dress modestly in the village
Away from the bikini beach, cover your shoulders and knees. This applies to men and women, and especially near the mosque.
No alcohol on the island
Alcohol is not sold on Maafushi and you can't bring it onto the island. If you'd like a drink, visitors usually join a boat trip to a floating bar moored offshore or take a resort day pass. Don't bring unfinished drinks back to the island.
Prefer a sunset on the water instead? Try our sunset fishing trip.
Be respectful
- Ask before photographing local people, especially women and children.
- Public displays of affection are best kept private.
- Keep noise down at prayer times and at night.
- During Ramadan, avoid eating, drinking or smoking in public during daylight hours.
