Which day trips are actually worth your money? Real prices, durations and honest verdicts from our local team.

Too many choices on the harbour
Walk along the Maafushi harbour and you will see a long row of excursion boards, each promising the "best marine life", "secret sandbanks" and "unforgettable shark swims". It is exciting, and a little overwhelming.
Here is the honest truth from a local team on the ground: not every Maafushi trip is worth your money. Some are the highlight of a lifetime. Others mean six hours on a crowded speedboat for a 15-minute swim.
Whether you have three days or a full week on the island, this guide cuts through the sales talk so you can spend your holiday budget on the trips that actually deliver.

1. Nurse shark & stingray day trip

Price: $60 per person · Duration: full day, 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM · Worth it? Yes, 100%. This is Maafushi's signature trip for a reason.
What happens: on our Full Day Adventure you start at the Dhiggiri house reef to snorkel alongside tawny nurse sharks in clear, shallow water. They can grow to 2-3 metres, but nurse sharks are gentle, slow-moving bottom feeders and are not dangerous to snorkelers who respect them.
Then it's on to Fulidhoo, a charming local island, for a short island walk and the friendly stingrays that glide in to be hand-fed at the water's edge. We keep an eye out for dolphins on the way, and the day ends on a sandbank with lunch, soft drinks and fresh fruit.
2. Half-day snorkel, dolphins & sandbank

Price: $30 per person · Duration: half day, 9:30 AM - 1:30 PM · Worth it? Yes, especially for families or your first morning on the island.
What happens: our Half Day Adventure is a relaxed taste of South Malé Atoll without spending all day in the sun. It covers three stops:
- Biyadhoo Reef: easy snorkeling among anemones and the bright orange clownfish everyone knows as Nemo.
- Coral Garden: live corals teeming with colourful reef fish, with a good chance of sea turtles.
- Sandbank: a strip of bright white sand in a clear, shallow lagoon, with lunch, soft drinks and fresh fruit. Perfect for photos.
- Dolphin watching: on the way we look for spinner dolphins jumping and playing in the channels.
3. Whale shark expedition (South Ari Atoll)
Price: typically $100 - $130 per person · Duration: long day, around 9-10 hours · Worth it? Only in the right conditions. Read this before you book.
The reality: swimming with a whale shark is on many bucket lists. But getting to the South Ari Marine Protected Area from Maafushi means around 2 hours each way by speedboat across open ocean.
When a whale shark is spotted, many boats arrive at the same spot. It can get crowded, with lots of snorkelers in the water at once. On a calm day with an early sighting it is magical. On a rough day it can be a long, tiring trip with no sighting at all.
- Book it if: you are a confident swimmer, comfortable in deep open water, and whale sharks are your dream.
- Skip it if: you get seasick easily or want a relaxed, crowd-free day - the nurse shark day trip is the better choice.
4. Resort day pass

Price: typically $110 - $160+ per person, including the boat transfer · Duration: full day, around 8 hours · Worth it? Yes, if you want the overwater villa photos and a drink by the pool.
What you get: Maafushi is a local island that follows Maldivian customs, so alcohol is not sold on the island (see our local rules & customs guide). A resort day pass gets you a day on a private resort island nearby, usually with a buffet lunch, drinks, pool access and those famous overwater walkways. Packages vary, so check exactly what is included before you book.
Stay in a Maafushi guesthouse and add one resort day, and you get the luxury Maldives experience for a fraction of a resort room rate. Interested? Message our team on WhatsApp and we'll tell you what's available.
5. Sunset fishing & BBQ

Price: $30 per person · Duration: 2.5 hours, 5:30 PM - 8:00 PM · Worth it? Great value for a relaxed evening.
What happens: on our Sunset Fishing trip you head out by boat as the sun goes down and drop traditional Maldivian handlines for snapper, grouper or emperor fish. No experience is needed - the crew shows you how it's done.
Back on the island the evening ends with a fish barbecue. It is simple, social and fun, and it doubles as dinner.
6. Water sports: jet ski, parasailing, fun tube & kayak

Price: from $15 per person · Duration: 15 minutes to 1 hour · Worth it? Yes, for a quick adrenaline fix between bigger trips. All run any time from 8 AM to 5 PM from our activity centre, with life jackets and a safety briefing included.
- Jet ski - 30 min: $60 solo, or $40 each when two share. High-speed fun around the island.
- Parasailing - 15 min: $80 solo, or from $60 each for groups, with a free drone video. See Maafushi and the atoll from the sky.
- Fun tube - 15 min: from $25 each for groups. Laughs and splashes for friends and families.
- Kayaking - 1 hour: $20 single, or $15 each in a double. Paddle over the clear lagoon at your own pace.
How to avoid getting ripped off in Maafushi
- Ask about group size. A $35 trip is not a bargain if 30 people are packed onto a small boat. Ask how many guests will be on board.
- Check what is included. Make sure mask, fins and life jackets are in the price, with no surprise rental fees.
- Check safety. Your operator should carry life jackets, a first-aid kit and an experienced local captain who knows the reefs and currents.
- Ask about the weather plan. Good operators reschedule or refund if the sea is too rough, rather than heading out anyway - see our refund & cancellation policy.
- Book direct. Booking with a local team usually means better prices and more flexibility than going through a middleman.
Best time to do excursions from Maafushi
The dry season from December to April usually brings calmer seas, clearer water and the most reliable trips. May to November is the wetter southwest monsoon, with more wind and rain, but trips still run on most days and prices are often lower. Whale shark trips run year-round, while nurse shark and snorkel trips run whenever the sea is calm enough. More in our weather & best time to visit guide.

For most travellers, the nurse shark & stingray day trip. It combines nurse sharks, hand-feeding stingrays at Fulidhoo, dolphin watching and a sandbank lunch in one day, for $60 per person.
Is snorkeling with nurse sharks safe?
Yes. Nurse sharks are calm bottom feeders and are not a threat to snorkelers. Just follow your guide, keep your hands to yourself and never touch or chase them.
Can I drink alcohol in Maafushi?
Not on the island itself, as it is a local inhabited island. You can drink on a resort day pass or on licensed safari boats nearby. Read more in our local rules & customs guide.
How many excursions should I book?
For a 3-4 day stay, two or three is the sweet spot: the nurse shark day trip, the half-day snorkel & dolphin trip, and sunset fishing or a resort day.
Are excursions suitable for non-swimmers?
Many are. Life jackets are provided for snorkeling, and the sandbank, fishing trip and resort day need no swimming at all. Tell us when you book so the crew can help.
